The Peterborough Predators were narrowly beaten 4-3 by local rivals the Peterborough Warriors in an entertaining charity fixture at Planet Ice Peterborough, with the event raising more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.
The game was organised in support of Cancer Research UK, with both teams coming together for an important cause. The generosity shown by everyone who attended, donated and supported the event has already helped raise over £1,000, with the final fundraising total to be confirmed and announced in the coming days.
On the ice, the Warriors opened the scoring on the powerplay through Elliott Wilding-Glendele after 5:09 of the first period. The Predators responded before the break when Shaun McLeavy finished from an Ash Cotton assist to level the game at 1-1.
The Predators took the lead late in the second period through Ash Cotton, but the Warriors struck twice in quick succession through Nick McFarlene and Janis Vincukovs to head into the final period with a 3-2 advantage.
James Astill brought the Predators back level in the third period, finishing a move created by Adam Long and Richard McManus to make it 3-3 and set up a tense finish.
However, Brad Plater netted the decisive goal for the Warriors later in the period, with Oliver McGill providing the assist, to secure a 4-3 victory for the visitors.
While the result went the Warriors’ way, the scoreline was secondary to the purpose of the day. The match showcased the fantastic spirit of the local hockey community, with players, volunteers, sponsors and supporters all coming together to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.
